TOP TEN TIPS TO BUYING TRANSLATION SERVICES

  • Do you  need to communicate verbally or in writing; verbally ask for an Interpreter and in writing ask for a Translator
  • If you require an Interpreter give as much information as possible including some reference material for the interpreter to prepare the terminology: where, when, how long for, what for…
  • If you require an Interpreter order as far in advance as you can: more choice of resources and a better prepared interpreter for the day!
  • Translation: be prepared to send the document for evaluation before being provided with a full quote
  • For indicative translation quotes over the telephone you need to specify what language combination is required, number of words in the document, indication of document content and what is the purpose for the translation
  • Do ask what qualifications does the translator or interpreter hold – for a professional service you should expect a post graduate qualification
  • Tell the translation provider what the translation is for: information, publication, etc
  • Resist the temptation to do the translation yourself or to ask a colleague who speaks the language as this reflects on quality – professionally qualified translators only work into their native language and only translate subjects they understand
  • Allow plenty of time to have materials translated, on average you should expect up to two pages of text to be ready within 2-3 working days
  • If you are having materials translated regularly ask the translation provider to always use the same translator and to compile a glossary for your project In this instance you may need to allow a bit more flexibility in terms of timescales. The glossary should be retained by you and if you have a need to change supplier give the glossary to the new supplier
